Preliminary Challenge

Here is our preliminary challenge. In this clip we were told to experiment with the 180 degree rule. Although we had good feedback on our lighting, camera angles and view points, the things we were told to work on were editing, to make sure the video flowed smoothly and was less choppy. Between a few clips, we were told to make the overall video tighter as we'd spent too long on certain takes. For example, where I'm walking from the front door to where I open the living room door.

As we thought the natural lighting looked good, we also didn't do any colour grading. Miss McCarthy then re-worked the production and added colour correction, bolder credits, effects and music.

Target Audience Research

To find out more about what my audience finds captivating about films, I have put together an online survey using google forms. Please click the link to complete the survey:

After having a selection of people complete my survey, I have looked at the comments and results and taken on board ideas and other things that we will have to include in our opening sequence.

Opening Sequence Analysis: TinTin & Reservoir Dogs

This Prezi is a comparison of the opening sequences from the films, TinTin and Reservoir Dogs. Although the films are very different, all opening sequences have set characteristics that make up the films and the fact that these films are so different is what I though would make his comparison interesting.

Story-Line Q&A

We presented our ideas about our opening sequence, Cottenham Park Road, to a group audience who gave us compliments, criticisms and questions back to look over. In this post I will be answering the questions we were given, to help clear things up.

Storyline from Ottilie Shpaizer

Questions & Answers

Q1: What year is it set it?
2016 - Present day.

Q2: Who are the characters in terms of Props Theory?
We don't have a sidekick specifically because we didn't plan our opening sequence around Props Theory. However if we were to have one it would probably be the gang members or the highest up member in the gang - Stacey.

Q3: Are you going to elaborate on his (Luke's) past?
As our production will be non-linear, clips of his past will be shown but won't necessarily be elaborated on in detail.

Q4: Your main characters, what are their names?
Who's playing what character has been decided but we are still considering names.
Luke Anwar (playing the criminal & husband)
Allanah Whatling (playing the daughter)
Ellie Kerr (playing the mother/wife)
The Gang:
Oscar Wright
Santi Alvarez Del Rio
Munashe Mwatsiya
Will Saunders
Stacey Zega

Q5: What does normal home clothes mean?
Just regular every day clothes. Not too formal.

Q6: What's the title?
Cottenham Park Road.

Credits Research: Spider Man 2

1.What have you found out from doing this activity?
I've found that there are a lot of people who have to be mentioned in the opening sequence.

2. Has anything surprised you?
I wasn't surprised by the opening titles of the films as I know it takes a lot of people to create a film, especially such a well known film. Because of this, I was expecting a bold, exciting opening sequence that was relevant to the films associated to Spider Man.

3. What do you notice about the style/font of the titles? How does this communicate the genre?
The Style us very much based on the genre of the film. Spider Man was originally a comic so the opening sequenced had that bared in mind and so the titles were organised so that it gave the effect that you were flicking through a comic. The font of the text also had a similar type of font that a comic would have.

4. What are the titles that you will need to include in your opening sequence?
As we won't have as many people working on our production as you would do if you were creating a whole film, we will have many less credits. However the titles I think will be important for us to include are the main actors/actresses in the film, the institution, who's providing the entertainment, the title of the film, who edited the film (visual effects), who provided the music and the director/s.

Individual Treatment

Treatment Outline
The film genre of our production, Cottenham Park Road, will be a action. To accompany this genre, we will be using grime music help enhance the mood. As of now we are still currently deciding what song/s to use and therefore we have not yet gained copyright approval. However, once we have decided on which song/s we want to use, we will email the record label company of the artist the song is by to ask permission to use it in our production. Our media text is going to be aimed more towards a younger audience, more likely to be living in London, ranging in ages from teenagers to mid 20’s. It will be aimed more towards generation Z and towards classes D&E (semi & unskilled manual workers, e.g. lorry drivers. Students and unemployed pensioners). When it comes to psychographics, our text will be aimed at explorers, strugglers and succeeders.

Short Synopsis:
Action/drama, non-linear opening sequence. A psychopathic killer released from prison seeks revenge on emotional and damaged wife after becoming stable and settled in her new and far away home. Is she about to end up back where she started or worse?...

We will have binary oppositions of empowered vs victim, man vs woman and strong vs weak. Themes our production will include will be, revenge, crime, violence, broken family, criminals, gangs and shootings.

Characters
Ellie Kerr: Mum.
Allanah Whatling: Daughter.
Luke Anwar: Criminal/ dad.
Ottilie Shpaizer: Camera woman.
Oscar Wright, Stacey Zega, Munashe and Santi Alvarez Del Rio: Gang members.
Paige McAllister: Police woman.

Locations
The main location that our opening sequence will be filmed at is my house. This location fits with the theme as the main female role has moved house to a new settled and safe environment, away from her violent and unpredictable past in a run down and dodgy area. This will hopefully appeal to our target audience as they will think a good area is somewhere you’d want to live and have a home in, which is what our character is also thinking. For the darker and more tense parts of the production that will need to look like a more rundown area, we are going to film in an alley way and in the woods to help give more of a feel to ‘the unknown’.

Visual Elements/ Mise En Scene/ Style Choices
As the genre of our opening sequence is action, we will be using colour psychology to help accentuate our theme. A red colour palette will be used to underline the key themes of danger, crime, combat and revenge. For costumes: Gang members will be dressed in black, family members will be dressed in regular home clothes, police will be dressed in police uniform and Luke, playing the criminal, will be dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit. These costumes should appeal to our target audience because they will ensure each character has a clear representation of who they are meant to be.

Equipment & Resources We Will Need
The equipment we will be using for filming is a DSLR Nikon camera (that I own which means we will not have to rent one out and we will therefore save money) which we will have set up on a long legged tripod for general filming (wide shots, close ups, over the shoulder shots, etc.) However, for more detailed shots, for example ones that could be very close to the floor, will be shot on a short legged tripod. (Close ups, extreme close ups, cut ins). To keep our production looking and sounding clean and professional we will have to practice smoothing out the sound between clips when editing, to make sure the audience can’t hear the cutting between takes. This is something that we have noticed when filming our short clip using the 180° rule.

Possible Struggles & How We Will Overcome Them
  • Trip hazards: All filming equipment will be stored and laid out in an organized fashion to prevent tripping or falling over. When in the house we will make sure everywhere is tidy and we will be aware of where any props or equipment is laid out. To prevent tripping over wires or cables we will use bright tape to stick them down.
  • All be in the same place at same time: We are all going to be organized with time scheduling so that we can have things filmed and edited efficiently.
  • Camera movement: We will not be filming any shots hand held to avoid the production looking unprofessional.

Summary
To summarize, our opening sequence will be a non-linear, dramatic action clip. It will be filmed in a series of locations each one to appeal to the different categories of our target audience. Throughout our production we will be attempting to portray a tense, captivating and suspenseful experience, that should be aesthetically pleasing to watch due to the way it has been filmed and edited.
